ADVICE #271

Opening of an account in the Swiss Bank revisited…

Whatever you say, and despite all the efforts of international organizations, despite the many new intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements on information exchange and on legal aid, Switzerland will have been remaining one of the most attractive countries for allocation a substantial portion of their funds saved against rainy days for each second businessman of this or that part of the world for a long time. And the "hot news" on the multi-billion dollar losses of the largest Swiss banks is hardly to make changes in the balance of power of this market.

Our first encounter with the Swiss bank was in the summer of 1992. The last (but not final) one is expected next Tuesday. More than 20 years of successful cooperation and unfortunate misunderstanding, dozens of people and hundreds of meetings, a lot of open accounts, and many closed, abandoned, lost, "inherited" one are between summer ’92 and next Tuesday. Mergers and acquisitions, change of shareholders, conditions changing and clients "soliciting"; dismissal of individual employees and whole teams leaving; negotiations in Zurich and Geneva, Lausanne and Lugano, Moscow, London and Singapore, Jersey and Guernsey, Hong Kong and Montevideo (yes, the bank may be registered under the law of Uruguay, but "according to the internal device," "the soul" nevertheless remains Swiss); searching the deposit opened in Switzerland 100 years or so ago and the opening of a credit line. In short, it is impossible to assemble in a short overview everything that during these fifteen years was a source of joy and bewilderment, the subject of study and research, caused both strong positive and tangible negative emotions for us and our customers. Each bank deserves a separate description that has already existed or will necessarily come next.

And now I am confining myself to a dry listing of all the financial institutions, which currently continue to provide a decent and reasonable banking services, it is important right now:

  • AIG Private Bank AG (last Uberseebank AG)
  • IHAG Privatbank (last AKB Privat Bank Zurich AG)
