The Republic of Finland is a country in northern Europe, a member of the European Union and the Schengen Agreement. It shares borders with Russia, Norway and Sweden. The area is 338 thousand square kilometers.
The main part of population is Finns and Swedes. Their languages - Finnish and Swedish - are officially recognized by the state. Finns is Finno-Ugric origin. They make up a large part of the population. The Swedish-speaking population is mainly concentrated in coastal areas in the west and south of the country, and the Åland Islands. The national minorities, the Sami (approx. 1.7 thousand. People), lives in Lapland.
The climate is temperate continental. Within the country, the temperateness varies considerably between the southern coastal regions and the extreme north, showing characteristics of both a maritime and a continental climate. In the Arctic Circle the sun does not set for 73 consecutive days during summer, and does not rise at all for 51 days during winter.
Religion: Evangelical Lutheran Church (89%), Orthodox (1%).
